PathFinder

PathFinder is a chatbot focused on Project Based Learning, so that children could progress through their individual projects at their own pace.

I joined PathFinder on a 3 month project to explore how we can make homeschooled children aged 8-13 more engaged in project based learning (PBL). Before joining PathFinder, they had launched an initial MVP with a pilot of a couple schools, but by the end of the project we together rebuilt the tool from scratch in 6 weeks, then implemented more features to a further 300 kids based on constant feedback from them during our own classes.

My main focus during the contract was on the user experience of the chatbot. As PathFinder grew, more and more tools were added that the child could use to enhance their learning. These included a child-safe search engine, video player and KanBan board. The secret turned out to be in maintaining status within the chat, and having a sidepanel that could react and render the information that the answer from the chatbot in a more engaging way. We also used UI elements inside of the chat at points to allow the learners to edit images and change the course of the learning to further make sure that the project was engaging and closer to the expectations of the learner.

My other focus was to make the experience feel tactile and playful. Alongside a designer, we built a custom UI kit that was scalable, accessible and friendly to play with.
